LSU women's basketball wins 79-72 to advance to the championship

The No. 3-seeded LSU Tigers (33-2) defeated the No. 1-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies (31-5), 79-72, in Dallas' American Airlines Arena on Sunday to progress to the National Championship.

For the first time in the history of the programme, LSU basketball will compete for a national championship. The women's programme had previously made it to five straight Final Fours for women between 2004 and 2008, but up until this point, the Tigers had never gone past the national semifinal.

Because the Hawkeyes defeated No. 1 South Carolina late on Friday, 77-73, the Tigers will play No. 2 Iowa for the national title. The most recent encounter between LSU and Iowa occurred on November 25, 1990.

The Tigers won on Friday thanks to a fourth quarter that was incredibly dominant. In the final quarter, LSU outscored Virginia Tech 29-13 to come from behind and win by seven points. Alexis Morris, a fifth-year senior, and big Angel Reese, a sophomore, each scored 27 and 24 points to lead the Tigers.

With 18 points and 12 rebounds, Elizabeth Kitley led the Hokies and was the only other player on the court to record a double-double in addition to Reese. Georgia Amoore and Kayana Traylor both scored 17 points as Virginia Tech had two other players in double figures.

  • Mulkey will take charge of a National
  • Championship game for the fourth time in her
  • career in just her second season in Baton Rouge.
  • She has a perfect record in these games, coaching
  • Baylor to three NCAA Championships in 2005,
  • 2012, and 2019. She aims to become the first
  • NCAA Division I women's basketball coach to
  • lead multiple institutions to NCAA
  • Championships. Mulkey has already won NCAA
  • DI Championships as a player, assistant coach,
  • and head coach in men's or women's sports.

One of the many reasons I returned home was to one day display a championship banner in the PMAC.

  1. Mulkey remarked, "I came home for several
  2. reasons, one of which is to one day hang a
  3. championship banner in the PMAC. You should
  4. never, ever imagine doing something similar in two years.

In Coach Mulkey's second season at LSU, this group has come together, making it to the national title with nine new players (four freshmen and five transfers), and only one returning player in Alexis Morri.

Her star transfer Reese was one of those parts. In her first season as a Tiger, Reese had another record-breaking performance, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead her team to the championship. Reese tied the NCAA record for the most double-doubles in a single season with her 33rd double-double of the year.

With 545 rebounds this season, the native of Baltimore set the all-time record for the most rebounds in a single season for both LSU and the whole Southeastern Conference. She also broke two more rebounding marks with her 12 boards (SEC).

Reese remarked, "It's like a dream. "Right now, I just can't even believe this. How much my life has changed in a year is amazing. We had more faith in one another than in anyone else.

The narrative about Morris, who appeared completely at home on Friday and realised her desire of spending her graduation night in Dallas, is still being written. The native of Beaumont, Texas, who led LSU with 12 points in the first half and finished the night with 27 points, will play the final collegiate basketball game of her illustrious career in her home state.

One of the main reasons Mulkey made the decision to go back to Louisiana was so he could hang a banner in the PMAC one day. Mulkey asks, "Never, ever do you think you'll have the chance to do so in Year 2." And despite Baton Rouge's rich basketball heritage, this team is in a class of its own.

Mulkey remarked, "It's weird that I'm sitting up here." We're preparing to play for a national championship, which is crazy. Tell me how we accomplished this in two years, I kept wanting to ask someone on the phone. Nine new works.
